Good short stories know when to start and when to finish.
Single-scene stories are excellent ways to get started.
So this time, challenges needed to take place all in one scene.

Write a story that creates a scene (or scenes) which occur during the events of an episode of Law & Order, but which aren't shown on-screen. Avoid copying dialogue directly from the episode, but a line or two is acceptable. You do not have to be explicit about which episode your story applies to -- and with all apocrypha fanfic, the reader must be able to understand the story without having seen the show. Here are a few examples to get you thinking, but feel free to choose any "unseen scene":
  • Rey's conversation where his wife tells him about the MS or the conversation where he confesses his infidelity to his wife. ["Aftershock"]
  • A scene between Jamie and Neil during their custody dispute. [The 3-Part L.A. series]
  • A scene where Eddie goes gambling. What is he like when he gambles?
  • A talk between Anita and her kids and/or her husband about shooting that kid at the ATM ["Competence"]
  • When Adam finds out his wife won't wake up from her coma; or, when he agrees to have the plug pulled.  ["Terminal"]
  • What exactly was Lennie doing when his beeper went off? ["Point of View"]
Your deadline: May 15, 2000
